William A. Kibbe & Associates was renovated an existing treatment vault to accommodate the new Cyberknife® robotic surgery system at Ascension St. Mary’s of Michigan Seton Cancer Institute located in Saginaw, Michigan. St. Mary’s Hospital is one of only a few in the state to offer this form of cancer treatment.

This new surgery combines image guided radiation therapy, robotics, and respiratory tracking to precisely treat tumors and other lesions anywhere in the body while protecting adjacent healthy tissue and critical structures. WAK was asked to relocate existing radiation equipment and utilize the existing vault for the placement of the new Cyberknife® technology. The focus of the project was to create a comfortable, architectural environment which included decorative tiled surfaces, soffiting, and a ceiling mural. With this atmosphere the attention of the patient can then be directed away from the treatment procedures.

The renovated space required precise coordination between the Cyberknife® robot and room obstructions to accommodate special clearances for electrical and mechanical equipment that was to be installed within an existing electrical room.
